Weight & Body Image Part 3: What does Freedom look like?

Read Part One HERE and Part Two HERE

Asking the Lord to help us overcome our problems with food and over eating, admitting we need help and asking Him to help us get there is one thing, but what does that freedom really look like?

For so long I thought being free in this area would mean that I would never struggle again. I would just be thin and eat the right portions and skip along my merry lighter way, but I just don't think that is what ir really means to be free.

If you think about the Israelites after they left Egypt, they were no longer enslaved but they certainly still had a lot of issues, bad thinking processes and ultimately died in that wilderness mentality. Their bodies were free but their hearts and minds were not. They had seen God do amazing things for them, but that wasn't enough to convince them to trust Him to get them all the way to the promise land. It says that God knew they weren't ready to fight the battles. He knew what would lie before them, and so they wandered and ultimately died there, all but Joshua and Caleb.

Perhaps that is a bit like what we can experience in our versions of freedom and whatever the issue might be that we have found ourselves enslaved to. The reality is that Christ paid our ransom and we are no longer slaves and we know and believe that practically but have we really began walking with Him in these areas where we count Him as one to be trusted? Trusted enough to break us out of our original slavery but maybe not quite trust worthy enough to walk us all the way into that Promise land, our hearts and minds still captive.

The walk to freedom, in freedom and to more freedom, is an uphill climb. God will do His part but we are still going to have to participate, He won't do our part for us because He hasn't made robots.

In Galatians 5 it says
"So Christ has truly set us free. No make sure that you stay free, don't get tied up again in slavery to the law. For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from grace. But we who live by the spirit eagerly wait to receive by faith the righteousness God has promised us. What is important is faith expressing itself through love."

Let's stop there for just a sec. All throughout its peppered with little commands for us, "Don't get tied up again" "eagerly wait" and "receive by faith". That is not about God just sprinkling us with magic fairy dust and we come up healed. Not that He can't or doesn't do those things like that on occasion, because He is God after all, but for the most part He is going to require us to walk our little behinds where He asks us to and do what we can while we believe Him for the work we can not.

Another interesting portion of that Scripture is it telling us that what is important is faith expressing itself through love. How does the Bible tell us we show our love for the Lord? By obeying Him. How does it tell us we can please the Lord? Only through faith! So we please and love Him by expressing our love for Him by walking by faith. That means not knowing when or how or why, but simply doing each small step he places before us, trusting He is able.

Freedom is not about perfection but our state of minds. That before we begin walking with Him in this area we a blinded to our slavery, our stronghold, being stuck and subservient to our need for food and the comfort that it brings to us. Now, we are aware, needy, dependent and weak, but that's OK. We will fall down sometimes, we will mess up, eat when we're too tired and not work out for 3 weeks in a row, it's going to happen. But we don't, rather we can not, any longer blame not knowing and give up. We ask for help again, pull ourselves up and depend on His strength in faith, once more.

Besides, it is in our weakness, and boasting in it that His strength is made perfect. Let's not use our mess ups and weaknesses to run back to Egypt, but keep moving forward knowing we are not perfect, but our God is able. We are a work in progress as we walk and depend on Him.
