October Blizzard? Why I love changing seasons!

It has been snowing for the past 15 hours, it is crazy! I am from southern California, and although this will be my second winter in Denver it is still always a bit shocking and exciting when the weather does something like this. Last year it didn’t snow much till well after the middle of November.

My son, also doesn’t remember much of the snow from last year I am assuming. He was so little. So he had so much fun playing out in it today, wondering what on earth it was and why it was covering his little bike.

Granted, I hope that this snow season isn’t settling in quite yet as we haven’t even really embraced fall completley, but they say we will be back in the mid 60’s by the end of the week.

Snow days put me in a good mood. Who knows why? There is just something cozy and romantic about them don’t you think? I have my great smelling candles burning, the heater blasting, a nice movie on, a warm cup of coffee with peppermint mocha creamer and sitting watching the snow accumulate on the bannister and trees outside.

If you were to ask me what my favorite season is, I would tell you the one that is coming. I love them all. I love enjoying the one that we are in just enough and then looking forward to the next one as well. Denver is great for this as there are such distinct seasons as well.

The thing with seasons is, you know a change is coming, you know it is inevitable, but you still don’t know when it’s going to happen. In a way its something to look forward to, a change of pace, maybe even a surprise.

When you are in a tough place in life this is such a place of hope. That you know a change is coming, things always change, that is what life is all about. Perhaps there are a few surprises in store as well.

“and even when the trees have just surrendered to the harvest time, forfeiting their leaves in late September and sending us inside. Still I notice YOU when change begins and I am braced for colder winds. I will offer thanks for what has been and what's to come. YOU are Autumn….

and everything in time and under heaven. Finally falls asleep. Wrapped in blankets white all creation shivers underneath and still I notice you when branches crack and my breath on frosted glass, even now in death you open doors for life to enter. YOU are winter…
and everything that’s new has bravely surfaced teaching us to be.

What was frozen through is newly purposed
turning all things green. So it is with YOU and how you make me new with every seasons change. So it will be, as you are re-creating me. Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring.”

  2. Snow?? Ah! How sad! It's way too soon for that! But you and your son look adorable playing in the snow :)

  3. I love all the snow. Here in Vegas we never get snow, but my kids always wish for it;)

  4. That's so crazy that it's snowing in October! Here in FL, it's really JUST now beginning to feel like Fall! I've never seen that much snow in my life. As a matter of fact, the only time I have seen snow was last year when a few flurries fell from the sky. Not even enough to stick to the ground.

  5. My gosh!! Crazy!!
    Lovely post, I totally agree!

  6. I can't believe it's snowing already!!! And, it appeared that you had quite a bit of it. :)

  7. Yay!!!
We live up in Laramie, WY and actually got our first snow a few weeks back.

We are of course looking forward to all of the fun snowy activities (skiing, snowshoeing, etc) but I am so thankful that it is suppose to warm up again in the coming days so this snow can melt and we can enjoy some more of the lovely autumn experiences.

  8. Maybe this snow day was just for you then, Ashley, God's way to put a smile on your face :)He is in the little things

  9. SNOW?!?!?! Yikes, I enjoyed a quick hour reading by the pool today here in Texas! I will admit that I will miss snow this winter though.

PS that second picture of your son melted my heart!!

    xo, Kym

  10. I too grew up in So Cal and now I live in Utah. Really I would be ok without the snow...but I think it will be fun for my daughter to play in. I just really like being warm!

  11. Holy cow! It's 80 degrees where I love! I can't even imagine snow for 15 hours!

  12. You and your little man look so cute in the snow! How lovely on this 80 degree day in Fresno... Thanks! Can't wait for cooler weather!

  13. I love this post....and I greatly admire that you can appreciate snow in October. I don't think I'd be so welcoming! You make it sound wonderful, though. And I'm glad to hear you'll get to experience a bit more of fall, still!

  14. How crazy that it is already snowing! Looked like a great afternoon with that little stud! :)

  15. You have a much healthier view of the seasons than I do.
I hate winter, I hate being cold, I can never seem to put enough clothes on to keep warm.
Snow in my opinion can fall and be beautiful, but once everyone starts driving on it and it turns dirty I want it gone. Plus I don't want to go out in it myself, I'd rather just view it from a window.
But you have a healthy view point.
Oh and I {heart} Nicole Nordemann! Especially that song!

    Have a Blessed Week!

  18. I can't wait for the seasons here in Nor Cal too! The trees are already changing and its so fun to actually have distinct seasons. That Nicole Nordeman song has always meant so much to me and come up at different "seasons" in our lives. I remember you were the first one to share it with me way back in the day! And... Ashton is the cutest thing ever!
